Countryside in Dak Lak, Vietnam

A Nature Retreat in Lak

Just an hour’s flight from Ho Chi Minh City, Dak Lak in the Central Highlands is one of Vietnam’s most under-rated tourist destination. Being off-the-beaten-path is actually preferred for wellness travelers, avoiding the overcrowding and pollution that exists in most major tourist hubs.

Dak Lak is largely a forested region with numerous natural attractions including Yok Don National Park, picturesque waterfalls, pristine rivers and lakes with the largest being Lak Lake. Situated on a plateau with a temperate climate, Dak Lak is best known for its cacao and coffee plantations. In this region, you’ll see more greenery than people which makes it an attractive destination for eco-tourism and as a nature retreat for those simply looking to de-stress.

Tucked among bamboo forests on an islet of of Lak Lake is a gem of a find. Perched along the rim of the lake, Lak Tented Camp is as close to nature as you can get without sacrificing the creature comforts of a hotel. The tents’ positioning offer stunning views of the tranquil Lak Lake against the backdrop of the Annamite mountain range in front, while the back is over 4.8 hectares of virgin forests and agricultural land adding to the sense of remoteness.

Spending time in nature releases hormones that relate to the pursuit of joy and connecting to calm

While there are no retreat programs (not yet that is) or fancy spa, there are a variety of outdoor activities and cultural experiences to occupy your time. But for many, coming here to enjoy nature for what it is – is actually what the body and soul craves for.

According to scientific studies, spending time in nature can be beneficial to mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. Also known as forest bathing, being in nature can help reduce anxiety and stress, and lower blood pressure. It’s not uncommon that people with illness tend to naturally gravitate towards nature. Trees and plants release substances called phytoncides which gives the forest its aroma and have been found to boost the immune system and aid in the healing process.

Activities that connect you to nature and the local community

Whether it’s a visit for one day or five days, there are ample activities in nature and cultural experiences that offer insight into the local traditions of the ethnic minority peoples.

Nature Hikes

Truly off the tourist path, the hiking trail starts at the foothills of Yang Sin mountain range and leads deep into the tropical forests where you’ll discover a fascinating diversity of local flora, fauna, and farm activities. On the hike, the guide will point out indigenous plants and herbs that are both edible and used for medicinal purposes. This region is also home to more than 300 bird species which makes it ideal for bird watching.

Biking to Villages

More than just biking, you’ll be riding along the same dirt trails as the locals and observe firsthand the activities of their everyday life. Traveling through the rustic countryside you’ll witness farmers tending their rice fields and herding water buffaloes. Soak in the beautiful bucolic scenery as you ride pass the changing landscapes from forests to farm lands. Learn about cacao farming firsthand as you visit the home and farm of a M’nong family in Yang Tao village. Over cacao wine and cacao nibs with the family, you’ll gain a deeper insight into the fascinating culture and traditions of the M’nong ethnic people.

Kayaking

With the entire Lak Lak at your doorstep, it’s easy to just get on a kayak and paddle on this gentle lake. Paddling closer to the center of the lake affords stunning views of the surrounding landscape of mountains and forests.
